Nice Hill Climb to a Scenic Vista: Rates a 3 on our 5 scaleGoing south, up Stunt Rd from Mulholland, you'll ascend some 2,500 feet in less than 4 minutes. Once to the top, haze normally limits the grandure of an otherwise scenic, 360 degree panormaic vista, at the intersection of Stunt, Schueren, and SaddlePeak. Autumn is the best time of year for some quality time in your two-seater at Saddle Peak. The view, inland, is spectacular, on clear nights.
Other than the advisory denoted below, there are no surprises on Stunt Rd. Very predictable. Fairly good visibility. Prone to advection fog, though, Stunt has plenty of Botz Dotts. A residential neighborhood, there are no cattle bars. Drives best as a hill climb, southbound, up to Saddle Peak. Drives best very early in the morning (before the bikers wake up), or very late at night.
Stunt Cny Rd is 4.1 miles in length, exactly. Every time we're in the Santa Monica Transverse Ranges, we drive Stunt Canyon Road.
Advisory: Exactly 0.75 (3/4) mile, south of Mulholland, there's an area of Stunt Cny Rd which is perrenially denigrated by solufluction, and perennially under repair. Looking at the map above, the area concerned is the first 90 degree switchback, where Stunt attempts to go parallel, ESE, along the stream, about a half mile or so before it crosses it. On the top map, I've positioned a pointer there for your perusal, but you'll see it more clearly on the newer map, below.
A few sport bike riders have gone down on that turn, hard, and I almost lost it there in a very big way, myself. As you depart Mulholland Highway, going southbound, up to Saddle Peak, you'll see an orange sign: "Rough Road Ahead." No sooner than you do, you'll crest a brow, going left, that suddenly becomes a little choppy. It then drops away, sharply, and your suspension will wholly unload. If you're not careful, the back end will step out on you, in a very big way, necessitating a monster correction. Easy does it through there. Do not "freewheel" that turn... use some revs.
Also, bring binoculars on this drive... the vista (smog permitting) at the top of the hill is arguably the best in Southern California. It used to be a look out station, during WW II; spotters used to be positioned there, 24/7, during the 1940s, charged with the task of pinpointing balloon suspended ordinance blowing in off the easterlies, from Imperial Japan. Have no fear: There are no more unexploded bombs left over from WWII in the Santa Monica Transverse Ranges. Prone to fire-spore germination, every square inch of this area, over the course of the last 60 years, was, at one time or another, on fire.
