Piuma: A 4.25 on our 5 scale- Piuma Canyon Road constitutes the steepest downhill on the North face of the Santa Monica Transverse Ranges. Favors nimble, lightweight cars, with excellent brakes, piloted by brave, confident drivers. Frequently fogged in during winter and spring. Henceforth, Botts Dotts are ever-omnipresent. But, they won't spoil this drive. We particularly enjoy the scenic vista at Saddle Peak, located at the intersection of Schueren, Saddle Peak Rd, and Stunt Rd. Bring binoculars... on a clear day, you can watch the planes landing at LAX.
- Elevation you rapidly gain ascending Las Flores Canyon, you'll pare down, painfully so, traversing Piuma to Cold Canyon. There are a couple places we use to get airborne on Piuma, but that was remedied quite sometime ago. Going downhill, approaching from your fourth gear, be prepared for several rather tight switchbacks, some of which will take you down to your 1st gear. Lots of armco, however, to catch you, if you screw up. Avoid Las Virgines Rd at all cost... Take the hairpin right at Cold Canyon, instead, and link back to Mulholland Hwy. Going west from there works better.
- Cold Canyon Rd: A perfect 5 on our 5 scale
- Best Short Canyon through the forest. A terrific little road! Those esses can be a little tricky. Cold Canyon Rd is perfect for what it needs to be: It gets us back to Mulholland Hwy, in great style. Flying down Piuma toward Las Virgenes, we love lighting our tail lights red hot, for the Hairpin at Cold Cny, then banging back up the gears toward Mulholland.

One lap: 14.5 miles, exactly, two thousand foot elevation change. Stunt Canyon, Schueren Rd, Piuma Cny Rd, Cold Canyon, and Mulholland Highway, amalgamated, constitute "Mulholland Raceway West." This loop rates a 5 on our 5 scale. It drives best going clockwise. If you're going to run our West Loop, then mind the first gear hairpin, Piuma & Cold Canyon. at Saddle Peak Lodge. Also, there's an anomaly on Stunt Rd you should be aware of; refer to the advisory posted to Stunt Cny Rd (just one-click on Stunt Rd, on the map above).
- Heed: If you look real close (map above), you'll see the Woodbluff shortcut just east of where Piuma intersects Cold Cny. If your screen resolution is high enough, it should appear as a faint gray line. Going hammer and tongs, that shortcut shaves more than 10 seconds.
- Shhhh... Mums the word on Mulholland Raceway West. Fair enough?
