Cajon to Crestline Hill Climb: Rates 3.5 on our 5 scaleThose who moved to rustic Lake Arrowhead, tended to have done so, on a whim, but later to discover, it is nearly impossible, getting any place, anytime soon. Highway 138 serves as a critical artery which facilitates trade, ingress and egress, for the Crestline and Silverlake conberbations, to and with points west. For Lake Arrowhead dwellers, Hwy 138 is the only efficient artery for which to migrate westbound. Hwy 138 is laden excessive commuter and commercial traffic. It tends to be in fair condition at its westernmost terminus, at Cajon, improving as you ascend, to Crestline.
From Cajon Junction, the Hwy 138 ascent begins with a tight succession of second gear switchbacks punctuated by short chutes plagued with dips. Hwy 1387 is choppy, very rough, before the road opens up, most 4th and fifth gear stuff, before tightening back up, as you make the final ascent, from Valley of Enchantment, to Crestline. Traveling eastbound, from Cajon Junction, having emerged from the tight, technical initial segment, time to put the hammer down, you'll go up into triple digits, exploring the upper range of your speedometer.
A wonderful drive, just so long as you don't have a competition suspension, with pop-up headlights.
Nuisance Advisory: For those with pop-up headlights, the initial segment on Hwy 138 is rough enough, to shake loose headlight buckets of vehicles with a competition suspension. Everytime we make this drive, so many lumbering SUVs to contend with, and old guys in their Corvettes, moving at a crawl.
