Beautiful drive overlooking Castaic Reservoir: Rates 4 on our 5 scale (sanded during winter) -Lake Hughes Rd connects rural residents of Elizabeth Lake to Interstate 5. Going NE to SW, Lake Hughes Road starts tight, then opens up nicely approaching Castaic Reservior, going Southwest. Fair to good condition. Visability is very good. Few surprises. Very remote. No Botz dotts or cattle bars. One stream is crossed going less than a click south of Elizabeth Lake Rd. Lake Hughes takes snow in winter. Many scenic vistas. But, for our money, we prefer going Pine Canyon to Cerro Noroeste.
Few surprises, but, keep in mind: This is not Angeles Forest Highway. You will come down, to your second gear. And, you will reach your terminal velocity. Noteworthy, this drive is murder on high durometer suspension bushings. FYI: In case you didn't know, suspension bushings are only meant, at most, for one season of competition driving. If you have urethane competition bushings? One week, after a10/10ths romp, across Lake Hughes Rd, your car will start creeking. Just so you know: OEM suspension bushings are best, here.
So rough, everytime I drive Lake Hughes Rd, I'll have to readjust my pop up headlights; break out the screwdrivers and socket wrenches, go at my car, ratchet everything back down.
None of the roads you see highlited in red, north of Hwy 14, drive well mid-winter through early spring. January to April is a bad time to run canyon roads in the Northern Transverse Ranges. They're frequently sanded down by county public works. Taking a caravan of sports cars through there during winter, it's common for the cars behind to get sandblasted, necessitating replacement of windshields and headlight lenses. Best time to run these roads is during Indian Summer (through November). If you're running Lale Hughes Road during wintertime? Make sure you tell your guys to use their bras.
This road drives best from NE to SW. There's ample of opportunities for passing. As you approach Castaic, you'll use up most of your speedometer. Very remote: Few if any households established roadside.
Advisory: Once into Castaic Junction, mind your manners. Make complete stops at all stop signs, and mind the speed limit in Castaic.
